The Kootenay Regional Film Commission

The Kootenay Regional Film Commission (KRFC) is a collaborative partnership between NCTS and Kootenay Rockies Tourism (KRT), with oversight and input from Creative BC.

We design strategies and opportunities for economic development through increased capacity in film service and attraction for the region.

The Kootenay Regional Film Commission:

  • Is the first point of contact for all Kootenay Rockies film-related activities
  • Assists production companies coming to the region
  • Markets and attracts productions to the region, in collaboration with tourism strategies and activities
  • Develops regional film resources including the locations library, crew and supply services database and filming activity reporting and tracking
  • Provides educational and training opportunities to local film industry workers

The KRT and NCTS Partnership:

  • Brings knowledge, expertise and capacity in the fields of tourism and destination management, economic and cultural development, film presentation and production, community program and service provision, and respective local, national and international networks in their fields
  • Offers full regional coverage, facilitating cohesive communication and ease of logistics for production across a large, low-density area of British Columbia

BC Tax Incentives and Credits

Filming in the Kootenay region means big savings for your production company.

The film application and permitting process is less expensive in general, and in some cases, not required. Engineering costs, signage, policing, highway use, street use and park use permits are also less expensive here than other parts of the province. Municipalities are courteous, the film permitting process is streamlined, and our film-friendly communities, merchant associations, and chambers of commerce always welcome film companies who want to do business in their communities.

Because of the uncrowded and unspoiled nature of our film locations, production companies will save a ton of money on location site fees. Costly and redundant film personnel are typically unnecessary.

On top of these savings, production companies can also benefit from the following distance tax credits.

The British Columbia government has announced an increase in the Film Incentive BC (FIBC) and Production Services Tax Credit (PSTC) for productions that start principal photography on or after January 1, 202512345. The FIBC basic credit will increase from 35% to 40%, and the PSTC basic credit will increase from 28% to 36%

Production Services Tax Credit (PSTC)

This ‘distant’ tax credit allows productions to claim another 6 percent bump above the base rates for Metro Vancouver and the Lower Mainland.
